The first video is from Global Winnipeg about anger over the WBC protest plans:

Second, one from ChrisD.ca about the human wall of supporters at the funeral (the link leads to an article about the silent protest):

Amazing. So many Canadians standing together in peaceful solidarity.

I am so proud to be a Winnipeger right now. We stood strong and shut the WBC's wicked plot right down. And there was no sign of PETA at the funeral, which was a darned good thing for the sake of their safety.

Guess who didn't show up to protest Tim McLean's funeral?

A couple of days ago, Shirley Phelps said: "The last thing I am worried about are some brutes Canada. We will know what to do when the hour comes."

*laughs* Yeah, run away with your tails between your legs. As I said before: Fucking candy-assed cowards.

I guess the prospect of being arrested for sneaking into the country didn't appeal to them -- nor, perhaps, the possibility of some good ol' Canadian boys shoving hockey sticks so far up their rectums that they'd be shitting black tape for a week.

In one way, this is a relief. In another way, it's a disappointment, because seeing them seized and conducted to a jail cell would have been most satisfying. (Mind you, that may yet happen if the RCMP finds them. I don't think sneaking into a country that expressly told you to stay out was exactly the smartest thing to do.)

The funeral of Tim McLean (may he rest in peace) might be a flashpoint of raw emotion as not only the Westboro Baptist Church turns out to picket, but also PETA.

The audacity, it boggles the mind.

However, the WBC folks may have grown a brain and decided that protesting at the funeral might be *gasp* dangerous. And they're daring to play the "OMG YU PEEPLE HAS NO FREEDUM OF RELIJIN!1!!" card. *snort* Please. What we DO have is freedom from harassment clauses in our laws, to wit:

175. (1) Every one who
a) not being in a dwelling-house, causes a disturbance in or near a public place,
(i) by fighting, screaming, shouting, swearing, singing or using insulting or obscene language,is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.
176. (1) Every one who
(a) by threats or force, unlawfully obstructs or prevents or endeavours to obstruct or prevent a clergyman or minister from celebrating divine service or performing any other function in connection with his calling, or
(b) knowing that a clergyman or minister is about to perform, is on his way to perform or is returning from the performance of any of the duties or functions mentioned in paragraph (a)
(i) assaults or offers any violence to him, or
(ii) arrests him on a civil process, or under the pretence of executing a civil process,is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.

(2) Every one who wilfully disturbs or interrupts an assemblage of persons met for religious worship or for a moral, social or benevolent purpose is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.
(3) Every one who, at or near a meeting referred to in subsection (2), wilfully does anything that disturbs the order or solemnity of the meeting is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

And:

180. (1) Every one who commits a common nuisance and thereby
(a) endangers the lives, safety or health of the public, or
(b) causes physical injury to any person,is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
(2) For the purposes of this section, every one commits a common nuisance who does an unlawful act or fails to discharge a legal duty and thereby
(a) endangers the lives, safety, health, property or comfort of the public; or
(b) obstructs the public in the exercise or enjoyment of any right that is common to ALL SUBJECTS OF HER MAJESTY IN CANADA.

In other words, if either WBC or PETA shows up at the funeral and starts shilling their shit, they may well be screwed. I, for one, will be waving pom-poms and cheering myself hoarse.

From a CBC article about the planned WBC protest of Tim McLean's funeral...

However, Phelps-Roper said the reaction the group has raised from some police and public officials has her questioning whether the planned protest will go ahead.

"The question to my mind [is] whether or not we ought to get them the heck out of that country, because that's some crazy stuff when you've got your officials talking like they are in a back-alley brawl and not government officials who took an oath to obey the law and so forth."

"Ooooh, help, help! We is being threatened, instead of being teh ones doin' the threatenin'! WTF IS UP WITH THAT??1?1? OPPRESHUN! OPPRESHUN!"

My sympathy for the bitches and bastards in question can only be measured in double-digit negative numbers.

Phelps-Roper said she would advise church members not to go ahead with the protest if there is a concern they might be arrested or harmed.

Fucking candy-assed cowards. The slightest sign of trouble and they shut their pestilent yaps and run like whipped schoolgirls. So much for the courage of their detestible convictions.

Between WBC and PETA, I've been having a very angry couple of days.

It's a definite: several members of Westboro Baptist Church snuck into Canada past the border guards. They are now in hiding somewhere in Manitoba.

However, they had their protest signs (which they didn't want the border guards to find) FedExed to them.

*headdesk, headdesk, headdesk*

They're so arrogant they think they can get away with anything. However, the Canadian government has expressly forbidden them entry into our country, and the authorities do NOT take well to being mocked, much less by fanatical disruptive right-wing nutjobs.

The WBC horde is likely to find RCMP swarming up their asses as soon as they stick their heads out of cover (and even before, if the FedEx shipment is tracked). Hopefully they'll be in a jail cell before they have a chance to get within spitting distance of the McLean funeral tomorrow.

From Daily Kos, in reponse to the Westboro Baptist Church's plan to come up to Winnipeg and picket at Tim McLean's funeral...

Never one to pass up a notable funeral in order to spew his sewage, Freddy and the Family was planning on coming up to demonstrate, to show, and I quote, that Canadians are "cannibals and highway decapitaters", God's punishment for not killing all our gays, or something.

Typical stuff.

Unfortunately, Fred overlooked two teensy-tiny little issue.

We're not part of the United States. Entering the country is not an inherent right. And, as of now, it's a right that Westboro Baptist Church does not have. The border guards have been alerted to Phelps's planned trip and have been specifically ordered to keep him, his family, and other members of WBC out of the country.

Normally, I'm not one to give the Conservatives much credit, but on this occasion, simple decency has prevailed and some credit is warranted. McClean's family and friends, nor the city of Winnipeg, don't need Phelps's toxic presence.

But we do have a reputation as a polite society to uphold, so please allow me to attach a message for Fred:

Dear Reverend Phelps,
We do apologize for the fact that you won't be able to visit our beautiful country at what it perhaps the nicest time of year. However, please accept the following heartfelt expression in lieu of the right to drop in: fuck you, you ignorant, hateful, shitheaded fucking prick.

Yours truly, asswipe;
Canada.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

The Westboro Baptist Church is coming to Winnipeg to protest at the funeral of Tim McLean, the young man slain on the Greyhound bus.

A spokeswoman for the Westboro Baptist Church -- which is known for staging protests at funerals of American soldiers who have died in Iraq -- said seven members will picket outside the Westwood Community Church Saturday to let Canadians know that "God hates you, and it's because of your rebellion against his word that this child is dead."

These are the God Hates Fags website people, and a more thoroughly vile, hate-filled, and slimy group of idiots would be hard to find. If I wasn't up to my eyebrows in a deadline crunch I'd probably be out there ready to counter-protest on Saturday.

I think that the Westboro folks are going to find the Canadian authorities a LOT less tolerant of their publicity-mongering antics than the American authorities are.
