From Daily Kos, in reponse to the Westboro Baptist Church's plan to come up to Winnipeg and picket at Tim McLean's funeral...

Never one to pass up a notable funeral in order to spew his sewage, Freddy and the Family was planning on coming up to demonstrate, to show, and I quote, that Canadians are "cannibals and highway decapitaters", God's punishment for not killing all our gays, or something.

Typical stuff.

Unfortunately, Fred overlooked two teensy-tiny little issue.

We're not part of the United States. Entering the country is not an inherent right. And, as of now, it's a right that Westboro Baptist Church does not have. The border guards have been alerted to Phelps's planned trip and have been specifically ordered to keep him, his family, and other members of WBC out of the country.

Normally, I'm not one to give the Conservatives much credit, but on this occasion, simple decency has prevailed and some credit is warranted. McClean's family and friends, nor the city of Winnipeg, don't need Phelps's toxic presence.

But we do have a reputation as a polite society to uphold, so please allow me to attach a message for Fred:

Dear Reverend Phelps,
We do apologize for the fact that you won't be able to visit our beautiful country at what it perhaps the nicest time of year. However, please accept the following heartfelt expression in lieu of the right to drop in: fuck you, you ignorant, hateful, shitheaded fucking prick.

Yours truly, asswipe;
Canada.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Being from america where we let everyone and anyone do this kind of thing, I'm seeing this going "wow, Canada is refusing to let this dillhole enter the country!"

I have just decided to move to Canada, b/c this is freaking *awesome*! I wish they didnt allow this rediculous behavior (the protestors) down here *sigh*

I happen to think that the US system is TOO open in terms of what they will allow. Some free speech is simply destructive, and should not be permitted to harm society.

Sure, come on up. :-) I promise you that we don't travel by dogsled or live in igloos, and the only polar bears are at the zoo.

Yeah I believe in freedom of speech AND freedom of worship, and often one gets in the way of the other here. The old saying that if you give someone an inch and they will take a mile is true here, some people abuse what should be a treasured freedom. -_-

Wait, what, no polar bears?! XD But... noooo lol I grew up in the Mts I do love the snow <3

the only polar bears are at the zoo

*coughs gently* The citizens of Churchill Manitoba would disagree with this assertion. Bears, moose, and assorted other wildlife aside, though, I agree. Canada is a marvelous country. And I'm not just saying that because I live here -- I'm also, originally, from somewhere else. ;)

The specter of the R.C.M.P. dealing with the Westboro nutjobs gladdens my heart. The only pity is that we cant send them back across the border shot via a cannon...

You are quite correct, re: Churchill. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear: I was specifically inviting him/her to come up to Winnipeg. :-)

Oooh, cannon! Do we get to stuff them down into the barrel with a spiked pole? Please say yes.

Winterpeg? In that case they'll have to deal with Canada's most feared and ferocious predator: the mosquito. Of which I recently heard a joke -- one man complains to another that the mosquitoes seem to be getting bigger, to which an older man interjects that it goes in cycles -- the biggest one he's ever seen measured 6 cm... between the eyes. Personally, I think they're armed with little tiny chain saws, else I can't figure out how they get through the fabric of my tent at night.

It sickens me that they are citizens of the same country I am a citizen in :(

I wish we didn't have to let them in.

Phelps had also planned a trip to Red Deer for another picket this weekend. Did we let him in the last time he tried this?

The relevant point THIS time is that his brood snuck into Canada against the express refusal of the authorities.

When they show up on the day of the funeral, they might be going straight into a jail cell.

I know. They're so arrogant they think they can get away with anything.

Let's hope our government gives them an object lesson in how very, very wrong they are.

Canada sounds nice, but I don't think I can handle a place that actually has winter.
