Or if not, at least it has to be in the top three.

Car dealership abandons ad: Insert shows speeding, crazed driver
By: James Turner

A Winnipeg car dealership appears to be targeting an interesting type of customer -- drunk driving, pedestrian-chasing car thieves.

Winnipeg police are condemning the advertisement that depicted an officer and a pedestrian about to be run down late at night by a crazed motorist.

The full-colour, letter-sized cartoon insert, distributed Tuesday inside the Winnipeg Sun, depicts five red-nosed people partying in a car being driven irresponsibly by a wild-eyed man.

As the crazed-looking driver speeds through a red light at a crosswalk, a police officer appears to be fleeing for his life as the vehicle tries to run him down.

Passengers in the vehicle also appear to be consuming alcohol and smoking. Five stick figures are notched on the car door. The ad, placed in the newspaper by McDougall Auto Superstore, a Winnipeg used auto dealership, asks readers to "steal a deal off our lot."

The advertisement comes barely a week after a Winnipeg cab driver was killed at Portage Avenue and Maryland Street when a stolen SUV ran a red light and smashed into it.

In a statement, police said they had contacted the car dealership to let them know how they felt.

"We feel it's very inappropriate in light of events in the city over the last few months," a police spokeswoman said, adding the dealership was receptive to their concern.

McDougall's general sales manager, would only give his first name, "Sam," said the ad was developed by an outside agency, and that the company has abandoned plans to run the ad in the future.

The publisher of the Winnipeg Sun, Kevin Klein, apologized to readers offended by the content of the ad, and said the newspaper would review its policy and procedures about advertising inserts.

And now, the ad itself:

Can you believe that given recent events in Winnipeg, someone actually thought that this style of ad was a good idea?

*shakes head* I saw some pics of some accident on Portage by that sushi place... I can't remember what it's called, but it involved a cabbie... and both vehicles were just... it made me ILL to look at them.

And this add is in poor taste ANYWAY. Give your little head a shake, people, and please think before you do shit. We're in-advertently giving ourselves a bad name, really.

That ad is really sickening, not just in light of the tragedy that happened, but the whole drinking and driving messages...disgusting...

Even without its proximity to the tragic car wreck, that ad is just plain tacky. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a car from a place that used an ad that tacky.
