The meatloaf is almost done, and it smells gooooooooooood. We'll be having it with gravy, rice, and mixed veg.

A couple of posts back I mentioned some cookbooks from the 1950's that I'd run across. They're from Good Housekeeping, and some pages from Good Housekeeping's Ten P.M. Cook Book are under the cut. Be warned: they are not for the faint of heart.

First up, the cover. I'm sure that's a delicious cranberry/peach whatever, but it just looks a little... icky.

Take a good look at the ingedients in the drinks listed. I would only serve those to "the girls" when I wanted to make sure that they would never come back. Ever.

This is from the "Strictly Stag" section, and is worth it just for the decor.

If anyone's interested, I might post more pages, or pages from the other two books in the series that I happen to have in my possession.

"Strictly Stag" indeed! Heh. Could they have possibly made the scene more phallic?

While I could see the drinks as sauces, or components in larger recipes, as drinks they are unappealing at best. In cold weather a cup of broth can be warming and nourishing, but they take it too far!
