I just saw the first pictures from the Spirit rover, which touched down on the surface of Mars only hours ago... they're low resolution and in black and white, but it looks like the landing site is about as perfectly suited for the vehicle as anyone could wish.

A bunch of ape-descendants have sent their eyes all the way across the void of space to the surface of another world. Utterly amazing. What an age of miracles we live in! (Funny thing... watching footage of the scientists and techs in Mission Control in Pasadena when they got confirmation that the rover had survived touchdown, I was struck by how similar to the whoops of chimpanzees their triumphant cries were...)
