We're back from the vet, and $189 later Emmie has a shaved and stapled ass, plus a stylish Elizabethan collar.
Yes, stapled. *winces*
More later. I have to go and prepare for Kathy's wiccaning ritual. Suffice to say that our little girl is rather out of sorts right now, but will probably be just fine.
ETA, since my ride is a bit late...
So, yeah. Off to the vet, who was able to get us in for a noon appointment. We ended up emptying out my ritual carpetbag and using it as a makeshift cat carrier; Emmie was very good on the way to and from the vet, sitting quite still and only occasionally uttering a little "mow" sound of puzzlement and anxiety.
The vet saw us as soon as we arrived and checked her temperature (normal), her weight (good), and then her ass (not so good). Yep, definitely an anal gland abcess! He took her in back to shave her and drain the wound, but a few minutes later called us in to show us that in fact the abcess had popped on its own, probably yesterday (which explains why Emmie was more active after a few days of lethargy). The wound it left behind, however, was 3/4 of an inch long, and as he held it open we could see down past two distinct layers of tissue.
Ewwwwww, owwwwww!
He popped in a couple of tiny metal staples to hold the wound closed while it heals, gave her a shot of antibiotics, then sent us home with more antibiotic pills (once a day with food) and more Metacal (an anti-inflammatory, also once a day with food), as well as that dreaded Elizabethan collar to prevent her from licking at the wound. Emmie is NOT very pleased right now, but is currently asleep on the couch, her head at a funny angle on account of the collar.

Later today I'll post a picture of her in an Elizabethan collar from a couple of years ago, the last time this anal gland acted up. It's actually rather funny.
