Sea Animals Trained To Battle Terrorists.

An excerpt:

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Navy seal -- actually a sea lion -- took less than a minute to find a fake mine under a pier near AT&T Park.

A dolphin quickly located a terrorist lurking in the black water before another sea lion, using a device carried in its mouth, cuffed the pretend saboteur's ankle so authorities could reel him in.

The specially trained Navy Marine Mammals, based in San Diego, stole the show in a day of anti-terrorism training exercises held at ports throughout California.

The navy has been working with these for some time now. I think especially the Sea Lions and Dolphins in trying to find undersea mines. They are more sensitive then human divers and I believe they have a better success rate. Also less human life expended as well.

You're right; I'd forgotten about the previous research they've been doing in this area.

Still... it reminds me that the obsession with terrorism has expanded to fill all the available space, including the use of sea mammals.

I think it has less to do with obsession then a slow news day. For the military when they think of terrorism and the uses of these animals they are probably thinking the safety of their home ports and remembering the U.S.S Cole.

San Diego is home to many carriers, and super secret subs. They have to be protected. They are also keeping in mind what happened Dec 7th 1941. Keep in mind not that long ago on the news, a couple of kids(I think of the Islamic faith) were driving around with bomb stuff in their trunk. Their defense attoreny is arguing they weren't serious but it still was a pretty decent threat to the base. Keep in mind what recently happened at Fort Hood when one of their psychiatrists went bonkers and shot 30 people or so, killing a handful. (Plenty of warning ahead of time this guy was unstable and should not be on the base or employed by the army. But Pcitis struck even the army).

I know it sounds kinda funky, but I doubt they wouldn't use the animals if it wasn't a good idea. Military people being more prone to conservative ideas and all (evil grin)
