I often joke that I support same-sex marriage because "gay and lesbian couples should have to suffer just like straight ones," but seriously - I support it more because they shouldn't have to suffer in ways that straight couples don't.
I refuse to believe that even if they hadn't been married, that she would not have been refused access to her dying partner if she'd been a man with the DPOA paperwork. I just don't buy that.
