I had heard about this from other sources, and I find the situation completely unfathomable. The wanton, flagrant cruelty, from people who pretend to work in a profession based on care and compassion absolutely boggles my mind. I also can't get my head around the necessary policy making. Most hospitals are very concerned with using all of their resources to provide care for their patients, and to accommodate families, and also to provide security in cases where there are genuine threats to staff and patients. Where is there room in there to divert resources to 1) keep an eye out for gay people at the outset and 2) set a chain of action in motion to bar access to them that runs counter to the usual process? The paranoia, hate, and fear required for that is staggering.
I often joke that I support same-sex marriage because "gay and lesbian couples should have to suffer just like straight ones," but seriously - I support it more because they shouldn't have to suffer in ways that straight couples don't.
I refuse to believe that even if they hadn't been married, that she would not have been refused access to her dying partner if she'd been a man with the DPOA paperwork. I just don't buy that.
