When George and I got home from apartment-fishing, we found a cheque in our mailbox from DC Comics -- $71 US in royalties, totally unexpected, but most welcome.
And when we checked our email, we found that the company that had stiffed George for about $3000 US in December has sent out an email stating that they ARE trying to get their freelancers paid, and that if George will kindly resubmit his invoice on the job they'll try to process it within the next couple of months. This is a huge improvement over dead silence!
