I just got word that I'll be officiating a handfasting ceremony come September. Apparently the four "wedding witches" in Winnipeg are variously unavailable to perform the rite, so I was contacted on the off chance that I'd be willing to help out.

I have to meet with the couple to determine their needs and create a ritual for them, but... yeah. Strange things indeed. I never thought I'd have the opportunity to perform a handfasting. This is going to be a great learning experience.

Congrats...but if it's legal, don't you have to be a marriage commissioner????

I'll only be performing the religious aspect of the handfasting. A marriage commissioner will also be present in order to legalize the union.

In case your interested, you can apply for a temporary marriage commissioners license. They had discontinued it for a while but have brought it back. I was looking into getting a license to do a wedding for a friend this summer and was pleasantly surprised that the temp license is back. Although getting a permanent license isn't all that difficult, either. Just call Vital Statistics and ask them what you need to do.

This is what happened when we asked H to handfast us so many years ago. We thought we'd need a marriage commissioner, too. H did some poking around and discovered the temporary licenses. I have to say, it makes you and your beliefs feel a little more legitimate when your clergy is also legal. And H enjoyed the experience so much she went out and got a permanent license.

Me, I haven't decided whether to do a temp or a permanent license.
