I just spoke to my mother's doctor, and it's official -- she has cancer, and it's spread. They won't know more until they do the CAT scan today and some more tests.

According to the doctor, it's really just a question of how fast this is going to kill her. She might never leave the hospital.

I am very broken up about this. Made some phone calls to her friends, as she requested. Have made some initial inquiries regarding palliative and/or home care.

Still have to finish that HB issue today, even though my heart is covered with darkness.

You have my deepest condolences. Like many others, I'm unfortunately intimately aquainted with this situation -- in my case it was an uncle, who was as dear to me as a father (dearer than my real one, in truth) who lost a battle with leukemia. Through the time ahead you must remember to look after *yourself* as well as your mother in order to get through this ordeal. While I know there isn't anything I can actively do to help, I can listen. You can always contact me at Anpuat-at-mail-dot-com.

Good advice. Excellent, in fact, and something I tend to easily forget when I'm under a lot of stress.

While I know there isn't anything I can actively do to help, I can listen.

I appreciate this more than you can know. Fortunately I have my husband on hand, who's gone through losing loved ones to cancer three times, so he's already said he'll be acting as my "tour guide" on this ride. But thank you so much for caring enough to make the offer. I might take you up on it one day.

Oh Laurie, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I work in a place where I have, unfortunately, lots of chances to deal with this sort of thing so if you want any help or suggestions about places I may be able to help. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Thank you for your offer of kindness. I just might take you up on it at some point. In any case, we should get together for a cup of coffee or tea sometime... I've been missing your bright presence since Jeff moved away.

*hugs back* Thank you. And emailing me about mundane things is okay (though I suspect your email went to one of the accounts I haven't checked in a few days). I need to keep grounded in day-to-day life in order to get through this. :-)

Thank you... and this is going to sound like the dorkiest question in the world, but who, exactly, is this? *looks shamefaced* I've been wracking my brains and just can't come up with a Real Life name to go with the LJ account!

Yeah... it's a horrible shock, but in all honesty my mother had a TERRIFIC quality of life these last 15 or so years. And who knows? Treatments might be available, and I might get another opportunity to take her out to lunch at her favorite restaurant sometime soon.

I'm so sorry to hear this. As you know, my own father has been struggling with cancer for the past few years, so I have an idea of what you're going through. Hang in there, and I'm here if you need anyone to talk to.
