Since I had a deadline of 9 am to call in to Ipsos, George got me up at 7:30 and we went out to the Second Cup just up the street for morning coffee. This gave me a chance to see how I felt when up and around and actually out of the house.

Answer: not great. In spite of taking a cold med caplet and a Strepsils throat lozenge, my sinuses needed frequent emptying and I found it hard to speak clearly, and after talking for a while my throat definitely registered its displeasure at the exercise. By 8:45 I was ready to concede defeat -- I wasn't up to talking for four hours straight on the phones, and reluctantly called in sick again to Ipsos.

That's three shifts in a row. I'm trying very hard not to have a "three strikes you're out" mentality about it, but dammit... I just started at Ipsos again after almost 16 months away. I can't help thinking how it must look to them when I miss all the shifts in my third week back. It's not like there's much I can do about it -- infections will take the course they'll take, I am taking what cold medications I can, and when you have diabetes you do have to go a bit easier on yourself -- but still. Yeah. :-P

Maybe later this afternoon I'll try a bit of aerobic exercise. Even if it's just 8 or 10 minutes' worth. It will give me a sense of having accomplished something today, no matter how small.

And the writeup I sent into the Winnipeg Free Press for Beltane didn't appear in the Faith Briefs page. Could it be because I asked for it to appear in the Sunday paper, when Faith Briefs appears in the Saturday edition? *headdesk* Well, perhaps it will appear next Saturday.

ETA: Feeling a bit better. Practiced the "turning the mind" skill from DBT to stop beating myself up about something that I can't help (the flu), and reminded myself that in the grand scheme of things missing three shifts doesn't matter that much. It's better that I called in sick than showed up for work and jammed out midway through the day, thus messing up their project hours calculations. Not to mention that staying home means not exposing other workers to whatever it is I've got. Yep, it was definitely the right decision.

Don't feel bad about missing another shift at Ipsos. From what I've heard, this cold/flu is making the rounds all across the city. The chances are high that at least a few other people at Ipsos already have it, too. And those who don't have it yet will undoubtedly be grateful not to get it from sick co-workers dragging their infected bodies into work when they should be staying home and recovering.

I'm still slogging through this illness myself. My symptoms still don't seem to be as bad as yours, my throat hasn't been so sore that it felt like it was "scoured with sandpaper," but I do seem to be progressing through a variety of symptoms. For a day or so I was sneezing up a storm, now I'm congested and feeling like my head is in the clouds from blowing my nose too much. And throughout all this my appetite and energy levels have been iffy. I guess there's nothing much that either of us can do except tough it out. Take care of yourself.
