I only worked until 3 am -- the exhaustion and eyestrain and the beginnings of artist's cramp in my right hand just became too much. *sigh* What a wimp I'm becoming in my old age. Fifteen years ago I would have pulled a 24 hour shift without even breaking a sweat.

I uploaded the pages I'd finished (9) and sent my editor an email stating that the rest of the pages would be done by Saturday afternoon, since it turns out that I promised him the issue "by the end of the week", which could arguably be Saturday. He's okay with that.

Off to Safeway in a few minutes to pick up meatloaf fixin's and some other groceries. No sign of George's brother yet, and he was supposed to come by for 1 pm. Perhaps he's forgotten, or is too sick to come because of the new medications he's on, and since he doesn't have a phone there's not much chance he's going to get in touch with us if that's the case.

In any case... yeah. Meatloaf tonight.

Oh, and when I was going through my cookbooks yesterday I found three real gems from the 1950's. More on that later.

I saw this and immediately thought of you, [livejournal.com profile] bodi_kat.

Reversal Of Alzheimer's Symptoms Within Minutes In Human Study

It is unprecedented that we can see cognitive and behavioral improvement in a patient with established dementia within minutes of therapeutic intervention,” said Griffin. “It is imperative that the medical and scientific communities immediately undertake to further investigate and characterize the physiologic mechanisms involved. This gives all of us in Alzheimer’s research a tremendous new clue about new avenues of research, which is so exciting and so needed in the field of Alzheimer’s. Even though this report predominantly discusses a single patient, it is of significant scientific interest because of the potential insight it may give into the processes involved in the brain dysfunction of Alzheimer’s.”

While the article discusses one patient, many other patients with mild to severe Alzheimer’s received the treatment and all have shown sustained and marked improvement.

The meatloaf is almost done, and it smells gooooooooooood. We'll be having it with gravy, rice, and mixed veg.

A couple of posts back I mentioned some cookbooks from the 1950's that I'd run across. They're from Good Housekeeping, and some pages from Good Housekeeping's Ten P.M. Cook Book are under the cut. Be warned: they are not for the faint of heart.

I can't believe what they're eating... )

If anyone's interested, I might post more pages, or pages from the other two books in the series that I happen to have in my possession.

We just ate some of the meatloaf, and it was marvelous. Makes me wonder why I haven't bothered to make that particular dish in almost ten years.

Yes, ten years. At least. I think I'll be making it more often from now on.

The recipe:

2 beaten eggs
4 tablespoons ketchup
3 large dollops of HP Sauce
1 packet onion soup mix

Stir these ingredients together, then add:

1 kg (2.3 lbs) lean ground beef
1/3 cup oatmeal (or more until desired consistency is reached)

Mix thoroughly. Divide meat between two 9"x5" loaf pans and bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 55 minutes.

For those of you who actually care, a picture. Yes, a picture of my meatloaf. So sad. )
