Yesterday:

I discovered just how much difference exercising makes to my blood sugar levels.

The target levels for a diabetic are between 4.0-7.0 before meals and between 5.0-10.0 two hours after eating. The previous couple of days (since I started taking my blood levels again after 3 months of not doing so), my "before" level was between 7.0 and 9.3, and my "after" levels between 12.1 and 15.7. Yeowch, and cause for slight panic, since 16 is VERY very high indeed.

Yesterday I ate lunch at Subway, bussed it to the nearby Safeway, and walked the seven blocks back carrying a little over a kilogram of tinned beef stew. My "before" level was 10.2. My "after" level, apres walking, was 8.8. My "before" level on dinner two hours after that was 6.6. *grin* Unfortunately, my "after" level was up to 11.5 (with accompanying symptoms of tingling in the feet), but it was still better than it had been the previous couple of days.

Unfortunately, yesterday was also a day of horribly low mood. I actually cried with misery for the first time in quite a while, and struggled with the urge to self-harm. The thought that the Ritalin might be losing its effect is terrible to contemplate.

Today:

Went out for breakfast with George, then walked two blocks to Food Fare and back, carrying groceries. Up and down stairs doing laundry all day, as well as house cleaning. "Before" level on lunch a few hours later: 5.7. "After" level: 11.3. (Note to self: carrots and potatoes might be spiking my blood sugar levels too quickly. Keep an eye on this. Further note to self: do reasearch on the glycemic index of various foods to see which ones could be the culprits.) *scratches head at the way the levels seem to be sliding up and down arbitrarily...*

After a lousy start to the day, barely able to bring myself to get out of bed, my mood gradually but steadily improved. I still feel fragile, but not to the point of breaking down under pressure. *twirls pom-poms* Go me!

I just finished cleaning up the place in preparation for tomorrow's full moon ritual. Hopefully we'll be able to hold it in nearby Munsen Park in the dark blue of twilight; if not, my living room will have to suffice.

Oh, and we finally broke down and bought an oscillating fan today. There was much rejoicing (and coolness) in the studio. ^_^

I understand exactly what you mean.

When we lived in Tokyo we didn't have a car and rarely took a taxi, because the metro system was just so good.

We had sturdy backpacks and would walk to grocery stores, load up the backpacks, and walk back. This was common among the Japanese, too, so we didn't look like uber-goofy gaijin.

Anyway, all that walking, combined with carrying loads of groceries, made for excellent blood-sugar readings.

You still sound good! I'm glad ...
:-)

Mine have been horrid. I regularly get 16's and 17's with my higest in the past few days being almost 22! **Screams in panic!** The only real symptoms I get when my sugars are that high is the overwhelming urge to piddle after every drink. And I get thirsty. Heh. Spend 7 bux on diet pop yesterday. Go figure....

PS: Lentils, although excellent for protein, are HELL on blood sugars! So are pork and beans!
