Bad news about author Terry Pratchett: He has a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's.

Well, fuck. For such a clever and prolific man to come down with a mind-destroying disease is a hefty piece of evidence that if there IS a God, He/She is not entirely benevolent and/or does not have human happiness at the top of His/Her hit parade. In the Disease Lottery, anyone's name can come up at any time.

I'm trying to figure out a way to help him magically (because there's sure not a helluva lot else I can do) without being able to ask his permission, since my efforts to track down his email address have been in vain. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.

Was it not once said it is easier to ask forgiveness than to seek permission...?

If you settle it between you and the Goddess that you were unable to ask permission because authors and the like are often impossible to contact in a personal manner (ie have to go through an agent or some-such, and if you did get an agent contact doubtful your request would be passed on) and seek forgiveness for not being able to ask permission then perhaps a working wouldn't be taken the wrong way... just a thought.

OTOH, PTerry himself says at the end of the article, "I know it's a very human thing to say 'Is there anything I can do,' but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry."

Which puts someone going directly against his public statement on thorny ground.

(I know he receives fan mail via snail mail, and has at least one official fan club who might have better contacts, but I can't help you with an e-mail address.)

Well of course, since I don't follow this persons work, I therefore didn't know there was any kind of statement.

*shrug* Just coming at it from a different standpoint.

Had I known I may not have made the comment.

Oops. I get the impression I came across as abrasive. Didn't mean it that way; I'd guessed you hadn't seen the comment, I just meant it as a bit of further information.

I'll be praying for him as well, and it's very sad that this has to happen to such a clever man. But at least we can say that he's given a lot of joy to a lot of people in the time that he had to do it; maybe if he hadn't had this happen, some else might have: perhaps he might have hit a patch of bad creative burnout and produced mediocre stuff that wound up eclipsing the brilliance of his earlier work. He's like a shooting star: they don't last very long as they streak across the sky, but they shine brighter and more impressively than the fixed ones we see...
