Warning: This story is not for the squeamish. No living animals were harmed, but the bond between people and their beloved pets is severely abused.

Pet cemetery horror: Owner finds dead dog in garbage bag at crematorium.

The Free Press was calling for letters from people who'd had dealings with Misty Gardens. Here's mine.

To Whom It May Concern:

Back in March of 2004 our beloved cat Micawber was cremated at Misty Garden Pet Cemetery through our vet's office. When the urn came back there was a copy of the Rainbow Bridge (unattributed) included, with an alleged pawprint from our cat upon it. At the time I thought that the pawprint looked too small to be from Micawber (he was a big fellow), but dismissed the thought. Now I am not so certain. The idea that the staff at Misty Garden would be so careless and cavalier as to falsify such a thing -- something that for many people would be a last valuable connection to their pet -- is appalling.

Is it Micawber's print? I'll never know for certain, any more than I'll know if the ashes are truly his. But doubt has darkened my heart, and I feel tremendous sympathy for those who are in deeper distress because their pet is currently at Misty Gardens. Something as valuable as the bond between people and their pets should not be abused like this, and the fact that the people at Misty Gardens are being paid for the privilege of doing so is even more shameful.

And for those who really want to read it, her's the GAFF thread I started on the subject.

I feel the same way about Joey's ashes but I have no idea where he was cremated. I figure it's best not knowing. Several people in the local parrot club still haven't gotten their dogs' ashes back from that place. It makes me sick to the stomach. If I don't have Joey, at least I know he was loved and I can honor him and the pets that I may have besides him. :-)

Just a side note about the woman who had her 'dog's ashes analyzed. They discovered not only did she have two cats in there, but a small breed of dog. It was like just shoveled random ashes from the crematorium into the urn!
