I managed to get out of the house this morning with George, because due to my workload I haven't been out of the apartment in several days and I was starting to go stir-crazy.
We bussed to Osborne Village together. George got off at the Safeway with a shopping list and I went on to downtown, where I dropped off some books and picked up some others at the Millennium Library. While I was there I signed a condolence book for the family of Master Cpl. Josh Roberts, who was killed in a firefight with insurgents in Zhari district of Kandahar province on August 8th, I believe. There were already several pages of heartfelt phrases and signatures, which I was glad to see.
Two of the books that I picked up were requested holds: Mommy Knows Worst: Highlights from the Golden Age of Bad Parenting Advice and Madness: A Bipolar Life. The third book is Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt: A Novel, by Anne Rice, and was in a display of paperback books that I happened to pass; from what I remember of Rice's style it will be a good trashy read if nothing else.
Then it was off to join George at Safeway, where we picked up about $160 worth of groceries ($170 if you count the $10 Winnipeg Harvest donation that we also purchased). Whew. Now we're set for a while in terms of provisions; we had next to nothing in the house, which was really starting to stress me out.
While we were there I picked up a few treats. A couple of bottles of Nestea Zero, which was on sale; I'd never seen the brand before and it's absolutely delicious. A "Sedona Southwest Salad", made fresh by Safeway, which consisted of baby field lettuce and romaine with chicken, bell peppers, feta cheese, carrots and pumpkin seeds, with creamy cilantro pepita dressing. Some honey garlic pepperoni sticks, fatty but oh so satisfying as a snack while working. Some multigrain breaded fish fillets that are low in fat (compensation much?). And finally some Old Dutch baked potato chips; we'll see how good or bad they turn out to be, but I'm looking at rejigging my diet to cut down on fats dramatically and I'd might as well start now.
I hope to exercise later today. I'm feeling pretty punky, physically speaking, but if I can do even ten minutes that's a start.
(And contrary to my icon, it's not raining here today. I just feel in a rainy kind of mood.)
