Only ten more pages of detailed flats left on this Hardy Boys graphic novel -- then I can start laying in true colors, and from there finishing up the pages. I'd keep going tonight, but my right hand is starting to seriously cramp up.
I have until next Wednesday to finish the project. Any later than that and the printing date will be seriously screwed up and delayed by Chinese New Year (since the book is being printed in China). Fucketty fuck fuck fuck. >.< No pressure, nope, no pressure at all.
And the artist on the book deserves to be strung up by his thumbs. There's a page where he forgot -- FORGOT -- to finish inking large portions of two whole panels, leaving the outlines of shapes that should be solid black and creating complex and insane negative space problems that just can't be easily worked into the color. I passed this concern on to the editor, who passed it on to the artist, whose reply was: "Yeah, she's right, it IS a mistake, but I think it looks cool/artsy/conveys a sense of distance/blah blah blah." (Right. Even in the area where the incompleted inks are in the FOREGROUND?)
Allow me to translate the artist's statement thusly: "Yeah, it's a mistake, but I can't be arsed to correct it." Shithead. Which means more work for me, of course.
*puts head between knees, takes several deep breaths*
Considering that I had to do quite a few complex color holds on this round of pages, I'm inclined to give myself a pat on the back for today's output, even though I was hoping to be finished the flats entirely.
This is the life of the freelance artist, or at least THIS freelance artist. Honestly, I sometimes think I'd be happier flipping burgers at McDonalds.
