I promised myself I'd update every 3 days minimum... and here it is. :-P

My mind is a tumble of emotions, thoughts, and plans. Despair and hope are at war again. Captain Canuck sits on my desktop and (I swear to God) laughs at me -- at least I'm feeling a bit clearer and can get some good work done on it today.

I try to pepper this blog with interesting stuff that's not about me, so it'll be entertaining enough to keep reading, lol, but today... well, all I can muster is the state of the Spirit rover on Mars. Those poor bastards at JPL -- to have such an exciting mission scuttled by a possible Flash memory and software problem (that's the latest speculation, anyway).

Apparently the rover has restarted itself 60+ times since the problem first showed up. Which brings to mind an amusing picture... the wide Martian plain, marred by the bounce marks of the lander coming down... the lander and the rover motionless on the sand... and through the thin Martian atmosphere, one faint sound rings out again and again: the computer "restart" tone -- ***bong!***... ***bong!***... ***bong!***...

Heh heh heh.

Didn't the first Mars landing mission have similar terrible problems? Hm. Wonder if there really is life up there, and this is their way of saying, "Earthmen, keep your strange objects off our planet!"

I've been re-reading one of my favorite books, Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles". Interesting paralells: The first two (manned) Mars landings wind up being disasterous as well. Life imitates art???
