DeviantArt shenanigans!

Apparently DeviantArt has changed their terms of service in a very nasty way. Full story here on GAFF.

I'll reprint the really relevant section:

As and when Artist Materials are uploaded to the deviantART Site(s), Artist grants to deviantART a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to do the following things during the Term: to prepare and encode Artist Materials or any part of them for digital or analog transmission, manipulation and exhibition in any format and by any means now known or not yet known or invented; to display, copy, reproduce, exhibit, publicly perform, broadcast, rebroadcast, transmit, retransmit, distribute through any electronic means (including analog and digital) or other means, and electronically or otherwise publish any or all of the Artist Materials, including any part of them, and to include them in compilations for publication, by any and all means and media now known or not yet known or invented ; to modify, adapt, change or otherwise alter the Artist Materials (e.g., change the size) and use the Artist Materials as described in Section 3(b)

Er, WTF?!?!?!

So everyone who has a DeviantArt account might want to take note. They can steal your stuff. It's right there in the terms.

Hasn't this sort of thing come up before? And haven't they always said it's so they can do things like use your art in DA ads and that mobile phone thing they have going on? That sort of thing?

Hrrrm... they can use my stuff, but I'd rather if they asked me FIRST, before ripping it off. Growl. This is scary... Hopefully it's like what Becky has said. It's just for ads, etc. :-)
